Public lands comprise 100,000 acres of the county, and include Pisgah National Forest, Dupont State Forest, Gorges State Park, Nantahala National Forest, Headwaters State Forest and Bracken Mountain Preserve. Plan a backpacking trip, take in epic mountain top views, shred some singletrack, or go exploring in search of the county’s 250 waterfalls. The scenic Blue Ridge Parkway is just half an hour’s drive from downtown Brevard. Adventures along the way in Pisgah National Forest include a stop at the Cradle of Forestry heritage site, feeding the trout at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife, or stargazing at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute. The French Broad river weaves through the valley below the mountains, providing even more opportunities to experience this unique part of the world.
