Named for one of Pisgah National Forest’s most pristine mountain rivers, Mills River is a small, fast-growing community located between Asheville and Hendersonville, N.C. Historically known as an agricultural hub of western North Carolina, thanks to its lush river valley, Mills River is now home to several new restaurants, breweries, independent businesses, and neighborhoods.

Incorporated in June 2003, the Town of Mills River covers about 22.5 square miles and closely neighbors Pisgah National Forest 26 and the Asheville Regional Airport. Asheville, Hendersonville, and Brevard are all within easy reach, with two highways 280 and 191 serving as major travel routes through the area. Although Mills River is blooming into a modern community, its roots are still tied to its rich history in agriculture. As the world of horticultural horse farming continues to evolve, so does this wonderfully fluid community.

Take in the sights of all of Mills River’s farmland as you make your way to one of the area’s many breweries and cideries. Must-sees include Bold Rock Hard Cidery, which features weekly live music, a food truck, and plenty of space to relax, and the world-class Sierra Nevada Taproom and Restaurant, which boasts brewery tours, tons of outdoor seating, and two indoor levels with bar and food service.

Make sure you stop by the Mills River Town Park, where the town has introduced a 15-acre pollinator meadow that not only attracts essential wildlife to the area but also mitigates the need for constant repair of the floodplain that it sits on.

Mills River is also home to plenty of opportunities to get active and explore. The Riveter is a climbing gym, bike park, and yoga studio all in one, located right next to Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and the Asheville Regional Airport. With monthly events that encourage folks from all walks of life to participate, there is definitely a place for everyone to get some movement in however they see fit.
